Water Shoes vs Regular Sneakers at the Beach

Quick answer: Regular sneakers soak up water and stay heavy; purpose-built water shoes are designed to let it out. Our aqua styles pair open mesh uppers with drainage soles and non-slip rubber grip, so they drain, dry fast and hold on wet surfaces — from $14.99, in sizes up to 16.

Every summer, plenty of beach bags get packed with an old pair of sneakers “that can get wet.” They can — once. Then they squish for the rest of the day. Since January 1, 2026, customers have ordered 74 pairs across our three water-shoe styles, so here is the honest, product-page-level difference between a shoe built for water and one that merely tolerates it.

The drainage difference

This is the core of it. On the Quick Dry Aqua Shoes, water drains from the bottom through open channels in the sole, and the drainage holes are described as removing water quickly to keep weight low. The Lightweight Quick Dry Water Shoes use a fabric that lets water drain straight through, and the textured-outsole aqua shoes list the same drainage-sole approach. A regular sneaker has nowhere to send water: foam midsole, padded collar, solid outsole. Nothing about it is designed to drain, so it holds what it takes on.

Drying time

Water shoes dry from both directions. The open mesh upper on the aqua shoes lets air move through and water exit, which the product page says supports rapid drying once out of the water; the sock-style pair is quick-dry by the same logic — thin, light fabric with little to hold moisture. A soaked sneaker, by contrast, is a sponge with laces: thick foam and lining that can stay damp into the next day.

Grip where the beach is slippery

All three water styles make grip a listed feature, not an afterthought. The aqua shoes describe a treaded rubber outsole shaped to reduce slips on wet or uneven areas such as pool decks, docks and shallow trails. The lightweight pair lists a textured rubber outsole for stability on pool decks, wet rocks and boat surfaces. The textured-outsole version adds that it is more secure than flip-flops for long beach walks. Sneaker outsoles are tuned for pavement; some grip fine when wet, but it is not what they are built or tested for.

Protection underfoot

Sand hides things. The Lightweight Quick Dry Water Shoes list a thickened sole that guards against sharp objects such as rocks, corals and shells while keeping a barefoot-like feel, and the aqua styles are described as shielding feet from hot sand. A sneaker protects too — that has never been its weakness — but it does so at several times the weight once wet.

Where regular sneakers still win

Everywhere dry. For the boardwalk, the drive, dinner afterwards, a sneaker is the better walking shoe — even our own Casual Slip On Sneakers promise a breathable canvas upper and cushioned insole, and make no claims at all about water. That is the point: use each shoe for what its own product page says it does.

Frequently asked questions

Can I just wear old sneakers in the water?

You can, but nothing about a standard sneaker is designed to drain or dry fast, so it tends to stay wet and heavy long after you leave the water. Purpose-built water shoes list drainage holes, quick-dry mesh and non-slip soles as core features.

What makes a water shoe dry faster than a sneaker?

Two listed features working together: an open mesh or quick-dry upper that lets air move through and water exit, and drainage openings in the sole so water leaves from the bottom instead of pooling under your foot.

Do water shoes grip on wet rocks and pool decks?

Grip is a named feature on all three of our water styles - treaded or textured rubber outsoles described as reducing slips on pool decks, docks, wet rocks and boat surfaces. No shoe removes the need for care on slick surfaces.

Are water shoes only for swimming?

No. The product pages describe them for kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkeling, beach walks and light trails near water. They work on land too, though a regular sneaker is still the better everyday walking shoe.

What sizes and prices do the water styles come in?

The Quick Dry Aqua Shoes run US 7 to 10.5 at $38.39, the textured-outsole version runs 7 to 16 at $32.99, and the sock-style Lightweight Quick Dry Water Shoes list sizes 3 to 15 at $14.99.
